Sunday Intellectual Discussion: What about love?

Posted by Picasa
What does the word love mean? In Ancient Greek there were several words to describe the various states of being, today we have one word and we use it for many meanings, Affection, Lust, Faithfulness, Parental kindness, even nice feelings for inanimate objects or experiences all fall under the same term. Most often the word love expresses a vague emotion that, naturally, varies in meaning with the speaker. Talk about confusing.

So let’s chat:

What is love? What does that word mean to you? Should there be more than one word used to express love clearly? Let me know what you think.

Wow... no one wants to touch this with a ten foot pole. Either this is such a deep topic that no one desires to enter into its depths, or this is a scary topic that no one wants to reveal how they feel... hmmm....

"Love is a many splendored thing... Love lifts us up where we belong... All we need is love...", while the Moulin Rouge movie may not have all the answers, it had a groovy remix of a number of cool 70's and 80's songs that spoke the modern interpretation of what is love: a warm comfy feeling that makes most other people want to barf when around those who display this in public. Ah, teen love... how sweet...

Love is a little deeper than that. Love is the ability to forgive, the ability to actually talk when you simply do not want to, love is sacrificial, love is painful. Love covers over a sea of wrongs and moves on toward the future. Sure, there are gooshy times, but there are a lot of ordinary times too, and then a lot of painful times that make love that much more engrained and deep. Sickness and tragedy are good motivators for that aspect of love, as I have been a party to in my own love life.

Love is more than something simple, and yet it remains elemental too. We are created to love and be loved in return, but we can never do that perfectly, so that's where the grace to forgive is so essential in love.

Love is love. There... how's that for a profound talk? Btw... I love you Cara!

I received a note once from a friend that said a true friend is someone who knows everything about you and loves you anyway!!!
