Sunday Intellectual Question: Mother's Day Best and Worst

In honor of Mother’s Day it would be great to discuss the best and worst parts about being a mother. Guys you can chime in too and let us know the best and worst parts of being a parent or a child.

I’ll start. The best part is definitely the smiles, love and hugs from your kids when they do something wonderful that you haven’t asked them to do. It makes you so proud. The worst? I was going to say lack of sleep but I think the worst is when your kids and the world around you ignore your hard work. Or are just plain mean about it. It doesn’t happen often, thankfully, but at the moment it happens it definitely qualifies as the worst.

I'd say that the worst part is the assumption that I, as a father, do nothing at home. I don't do as much as some, but I feel that I actually do a lot. I can look after all four and put them all to bed alone, yet some people look at me and think that I can't do that! It irks me, but then again, I know what I can do to help my wife have some time off (probably not as much as she'd like, but we can renegotiate if it means more golf for me;-) ).

But I guess that would be a topic for Father's Day.

Happy Mother's Day, Moms!!!

For me the best part about being a mom is the laughter, smiles & play along with the fact that babies/children are the best motivation in the world to get you moving, despite the fact that you are exhausted (I know, I know, we only have one...just wait until there's more!!)
The worst part about being a mom is that it never ends. It comes down to you being the responsible one at all times. Sometimes you just feel like running away where you can be free to do what YOU want instead of caring for the baby.
The best part of being a child is being taken care of. Having your mom make you something you love to eat, or telling you to relax while she takes care of you.
The worst part of being a child is guilt trips. These can quite quickly negate the best part if they are used a certain way.

I agree that the best is the hugs and cuddles. My kids are getting old enough now to verbalize some comprehension of how hard it is to be a mom sometimes and actually apologize for making it hard. The worst, as you say is the lack of appreciation. My daughter actually said the day after Mother's Day's "thank you" and "you do so much" cards.... "Gee, Mom! It must be nice to have kids to do all the work for you!" This after I had asked her to pick up her laundry and put it in the bin, while I was making supper, emptying the dishwasher and cleaning up the table for supper!!!!!! A little frustrating to say the least. All in all, I wouldn't trade it for any other job in the world. I just wish I could do it better and fix all the boo-boos. But, parenting is also all about letting go...eventually. Enjoy it while it lasts!

It is all so true. I suppose the worst thing anyone feels is to be ignored. Well said all.
